Women's tennis outlasts Wilkes

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team captured four victories in singles play to rally past Wilkes University, 5-4, on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center in Alumni Field House.

Trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match, the Fords (4-2) received several dominating performances in singles on their way to registering an impressive regional victory over the Colonels (6-1).

Freshman Robyn Himelstein, at No. 3, started things off with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-2) over Katie Lynn. Keeping the momentum going, junior Alex Ferrara followed suit with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Playing at No. 1, Caitlin Gallagher, the reigning player of the week in the Centennial Conference, extended her perfect start in singles this spring with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Melanie Nolt.

Haverford, the 16th-ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Region, needed one more point to account for Wilkes' first loss of the season and sophomore Kristen Andersen, at No. 6, delivered. Andersen's first singles victory of the season was an important one as she registered a 6-4, 6-4 win to clinch the match for the hosts.

The victory shows a tremendous amount of growth by the young squad as the Colonels, presently ranked seventh in the Atlantic South, claimed an 8-1 win in 2012.

The top doubles pairing of Gallagher (pictured) and Ferrara provided the Fords with their first point of the contest with an 8-4 victory over Nolt and Lynn.

Haverford gets right back into action on Friday when it makes the short trip to Bryn Mawr College to open Centennial action against the Owls at 4 p.m.
