Women's tennis celebrates seniors with 9-0 sweep of Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team closed out the Centennial Conference regular season with a 9-0 victory over visiting Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon.

The Fords (11-4, 7-3 CC) swept the doubles portion of the match to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the contest. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher, and the No. 3 pairing of Jessica Liu and Abby Payson, each registered 8-1 victories. Robyn Himelstein and Kate Donches, playing at No. 2, completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Laura Gradiska and Lindsay Morris.

Haverford continued to overpower the Bullets (9-9, 3-7) in singles as Gallagher at No. 1, Donches at No. 4, Payson at No. 5 and Liu at No. 6 each claimed straight-set victories.

Playing at No. 2, Ferrara extended her singles winning streak to 11 matches by outlasting Gradiska (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8)). Ferrara completed the conference regular season with a perfect 10-0 singles record.

Himelstein, at No. 3, also persevered for a victory as the sophomore edged Isabelle Rodriguez in the third-set super tiebreaker (6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9)).

The Fords, currently ranked 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic South Region, honored seniors Ferrara, Donches, Abbey Flynn and Jordana Bloom on Saturday.

The shutout victory in the regular-season finale helped Haverford finish in third place in the conference standings. Participating in the Centennial tournament for the sixth consecutive year, the Fords will travel to second-seeded Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday. The Diplomats (13-5, 8-2) edged Haverford, 5-4, on April 5. The start time for the semifinal match will be announced on Monday.
