Women's Tennis Starts 2019-20 Season Strong at Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team got its 2019-20 season underway over the weekend at the 2019 Swarthmore Invitational. In addition to the host Garnet, Centennial Conference foe Washington College and Division I La Salle joined the challenging four-team event.

Sarah Evenson led the Fords in singles as she went 2-0 with back-to-back straight-set wins against conference foes. Emily Shutman and Claire Johnson each posted 2-1 records in singles play. Both of Shutman's victories came against the Division I Explorers, while Johnson dominated the Shorewomen during her two victories.

Playing with a variety of pairings throughout the doubles competition, Anne Tobin finished her weekend with a perfect 4-0 combined record between singles and doubles. Focusing mainly on doubles, Tobin won her only singles match in straight sets before notching two doubles wins alongside Lisette Pham and another victory with Johnson. Natalie Williams joined Shutman as that pairing went 2-0 in their matches together. Anna Malkov and Evenson won their only match when they were paired together, giving the Fords a trio of pairings that went unbeaten throughout the weekend.

With the first tournament of the fall under its belt, Haverford will return to action this coming weekend for the 2019 ITA Southeast Regional which is once again being hosted by Mary Washington. The regional championship will run from Saturday, September 21 through Monday, September 23. Entrants and draws for that championship event will be released later in the week.

Following the ITA Championships, the Fords wrap up their fall schedule with their annual Alumnae Match which is set to take place on Saturday, September 28.
