CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's outdoor track & field team came away from its first weekend of competition with two more gold medal performances on Saturday. Katie Sullivan won the 800 meter race, while Nicole Giannetti was the first across the line in the steeplechase to give the Fords three champions at the meet after Emily Anderson won the discus on Friday evening.
Both Sullivan and Giannetti beat out teammates to claim the top spot. Sullivan edged out Nora Weathers by just four-hundredths of a second as she won in a time of 2:16.18. Yue Xiang (2:33:64) and Amy Zamora (2:36.24) also competed in this event.
Giannetti finished first in the steeplechase, while teammate Maggie Heffernan was the second runner across the line. Giannetti finished in a personal best time of 11:29.17 to move up to eighth in Haverford's record book. Heffernan, who is also ranked among the top 10 in school history for the event, finished in a time of 11:40.64. Haverford just missed a third champion on Saturday as Amelia Keyser-Gibson placed second in the 1,500 meters,
Haverford's 4x100 meter relay also finished runner-up in a time of 50.90 seconds. Members of that relay team also went on to find individual success. Brittany Steele placed fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.77 seconds. Taylor Murphy recorded the 10th fastest 100 meter hurdle time in school history as she placed fifth overall with a mark of 16.33 seconds. Tess Oberholtzer placed seventh in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.20 seconds and also finished as the top Haverford placer in the 200 meters. Kerry Quigley also ran the 200 meters, while her best finish was a 13th place showing in the 400 meters (1:03.32).
In the field events, Anderson followed up her discus throw with an eighth place finish in the shot put. Her best throw was 9.66 meters. Grace Mathis recorded the sixth best pole vault height in school history as she cleared 2.66 meters and placed sixth overall. Emily Williams contested the long jump and placed 14th with a leap of 4.02 meters.
Women's outdoor track & field will compete in two different meets next weekend. The team will send select runners to Princeton's Distance Night next Friday, while the team will also compete in the West Chester Invitational that will start on Friday, April 8 and continue into Saturday.
