HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball (3-1) team took a pair of 3-1 wins on Saturday, wrapping up the Haverford Invitational inside Gooding '84 Arena defeating Stockton and New Jersey City. Following the tournament action, Taylor Jones was named Haverford Invitational MVP while Juliet Young earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Haverford 3, Stockton 1 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24)

The Fords came out blazing in the first set against the Ospreys, hitting .343 in the first frame and .433 in the second to jet out to the early 2-0 lead. A service ace from Eliana Brown gave Haverford the 21-15 lead in the first, prompting a timeout from Stockton, who rallied back to within two at 21-19. Jadyn Elliott and Claire Jordan later teamed up for a block to make the score 23-19, and Elliott sent Haverford to a first set win with a kill at 25-20.

The second set saw the Ospreys hanging tough with the Fords, but a kill from Brown and a service ace from Juliet Young prompted Stockton timeout down 20-16. Stockton stayed in the contest, with back-to-back service aces from Aubrey Rentzel, but Taylor Jones ended the set with a kill for a 23-25 lead.

Stockton grabbed the third set with a quick start facing the brink of elimination. A 11-2 start for the visitors set the tenor for the frame, as they hit .343 while holding Haverford to a .182 clip. Haverford was undaunted in its approach to pull back to within five at 18-13 with Izabela Potocnjak and Jones each logging key kills to put Haverford within striking distance. Facing set point at 24-15, three straight kills from Kendall Otridge and Brown prompted a Stockton timeout, before a Fords error handed Stockton the third.

In the close-out fourth set, Haverford got back to its hot offensive start with a match-best 17 kills against just five errors on 35 total swings (.343). A scrappy Stockton approach kept the visitors right in the set, with Stockton briefly taking a 22-19 advantage. Jones and Elliott each logged kills before teaming up on a block to tie the score at 23-all. Stockton grabbed set point, but Haverford was determined to end things in the fourth, calling timeout and eventually fending off set point with back-to-back kills from Brown.

Brown (15 kills) and Jones (14 kills) were some of the key offensive contributors for Haverford, with Brown putting on an offensive showcase with a whopping .682 hitting percentage in the match, tied for the third-best in Haverford program history. Crisp passing from first years was everywhere with Cameryn DeBlecourt adding 23 assists while Kayla Chu notched 24. Young tallied 21 digs.

Haverford 3, New Jersey City 1 (25-13, 25-14, 23-25, 25-15)

The second match of the day saw the Fords surrender just 27 total points through the first two sets, with the hosts jetting out to a commanding 13-5 lead before cruising behind strong play from Jones and Otridge up front and another all-around performance from Brown. The first year from San Francisco added some prowess from the service line to her offensive firepower in the first match, with three service aces. The second set started with Haverford out on a 20-13 stretch, leading to an NJCU timeout. Taylor Jones took over at the service line, overseeing a 10-0 run as Haverford pulled away. Potocnjak and Elliott then closed out the stanza with a block at 25-14.

NCJU stuck around to take the third set by a final of 25-23, but Haverford was poised again in the fourth, with a 7-3 lead to begin things. That lead eventually hit 20-10 following a kill from Elliott, and both Jones and Claire Jordan were key contributors down the stretch to help the Fords win by 10. Gabrielle Fontanilla stepped into the setter role in the afternoon match, logging 13 helpers. Brown pitched in 13 digs while Young added a team-best 22.

Haverford is back in action next Friday, hosting the second weekend tournament of the season, the Ford Invitational. Haverford will face off with No. 22 Susquehanna at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night before tournament action continues on Saturday with Springfield (11 a.m.) and SUNY Cortland (2 p.m.), two teams also receiving votes in the national poll.
