Volleyball Wraps Up Oberlin Invite With Pair of Wins

OBERLIN, Ohio - Competing against the host Yeowomen and the Cougars of Chatham, Haverford (6-4) went 2-0 on Saturday at the Oberlin Invite, taking a four-set victory over Oberlin before returning in the afternoon session for a 3-0 sweep of Chatham in neutral-site action.

Haverford 3, Oberlin 1 (25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 25-16)

The 11 a.m. match with the tournament hosts saw sophomore Tèa Kuzbari go up against her sister, Oberlin senior Zoe Kuzbari. Haverford hit .281 in the first stanza, taking control of the set from the beginning with a 6-2 run. Oberlin battled back to cut the lead to two at 11-9, but an 8-1 Fords' run set up Haverford to take a big lead it would not relinquish. Taylor Jones had two kills and a block in that stretch. Oberlin pulled back to within two with a late run, but Gabrielle Fontanilla ended the first set with a kill at 25-22.

The second set saw Oberlin hop out to a big lead early, with the hosts going ahead 14-5 before Haverford began slowly chipping away at that tally. A 6-0 run prompted an Oberlin timeout, and the Fords kept building, pulling back to 16-16 behind a 4-0 run with Jones at the service line. Oberlin went up 22-19, but one last rally from the Fords helped the visitors gain control. With Juliet Young at the service line, the Fords erased the deficit to take command for a 25-22 victory.

The third went to Oberlin behind a .333 hitting percentage while the hosts limited the Fords to just .071 hitting. Haverford stepped on the gas in the closeout fourth set, hitting .360 while limiting Oberlin to .179. The two sides were close in the early goings, with the Fords briefly taking an 11-9 lead before Oberlin tied things up at 11-11. From there, the Fords built up a 16-12 lead, and held that same four-point cushion at 19-15 before a 4-0 run helped put the match away with Oberlin not able to answer back late.

Kendall Otridge had 11 kills to pace the Fords while Cameryn DeBlecourt added 24 assists and 12 digs in a double-double effort. Jones had three total blocks to go with seven kills and no errors on 14 total swings.

Haverford 3, Chatham 0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-21)

Coming back for the afternoon match, the Fords found themselves looking to shake free of Chatham in the early goings. Chatham eventually took a brief, but sizable lead at 17-13 , but Otridge and Jones tallied kills and later teamed up for a block to tie the score at 17-17. Chatham again rallied back to go up 20-17, but the Fords then rattled off seven straight points to prevail down the stretch. DeBlecourt and Claire Jordan were integral in that stretch with Eliana Brown at the service line as the trio of first years helped seal the set at 25-20.

Haverford then went to work in the second set, taking an early 7-2 lead with a Claire Jordan kill. Chatham rallied, pulling back to within one at 8-7, but the Fords then took over from there, going on a 12-1 run to wrestle control of the set. Otridge gave the Fords set point at 24-9, and punched down the final kill at 25-10, as the Fords hit a match-best .467 in the stanza.

Chatham proved to stay right in the third set, with Haverford holding a slight 9-8 edge in the early goings. The lead began to build from there, with the Fords going up 13-8 and prompting a Chatham timeout. After the stoppage, the Fords added on with another 5-1 run to go ahead 19-10 on a block from Otridge and Jones. Chatham had one last run to make things interesting at the end of the set, but Otridge ended the match in favor of the Fords at 25-21.

Otridge had nine kills while Jones added eight of her own. Annibelle Ernst grabbed nine kills on nine total swings. DeBlecourt added 17 assists and Gabrielle Fontanilla notched 12. Juliet Young (16 digs) and DeBlecourt (13) paced the back row's defensive effort. Otridge added three total blocks.
