Volleyball Sweeps Past York and Arcadia in Tri-Match Triumphs

GLENSIDE, Pa. - Breaking a stretch of five-set matches, the Haverford College volleyball team (6-4) won a pair of matches via sweep on Saturday at Arcadia's Alumni Gymnasium, cruising past York and the host Knights of Arcadia.

On the day, Eliana Brown led the Fords with 23 kills, while Taylor Jones (14), Gia Frank (13), and Izabela Potocnjak (10) also reached double digits across the two matches. Cameryn DeBlecourt (27 assists) and Kayla Chu (25) were instrumental in setting the tone while Brown added seven service aces. Kira Chaney added 16 digs. The Fords tallied 12 total blocks across the two matches, with Jones leading the way with seven, Potocnjak contributing five, and Fiona Moord adding four.

Haverford 3, York 0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22)

In the 1 p.m. match, Haverford looked sharp, hitting .338 overall, including an impressive .318 in the first set. The Fords posted nine kills in that opening frame to pull away after the match was tied at 10-10. They extended their lead to 19-13 after a block from Caroline Lucas and Moord, setting the stage for a service ace and back-to-back kills from Frank and Brown to put Haverford ahead 21-13. Brown then closed the set with a service ace, securing a 25-16 win.

In the second set, Haverford started strong, jumping to a 14-7 lead following a block by Moord and Brown. The lead grew to 16-8 before the Spartans narrowed the gap to 18-14. After a timeout, Haverford's blocking efforts intensified, with back-to-back rejections pushing the lead to 21-16. Jones delivered set point with a kill at 24-18, and a service error from York handed the Fords a 2-0 set advantage.

Haverford surged to a 10-5 lead in the third set, prompting a York timeout. Though the Spartans cut the deficit to 11-7, consecutive kills from Brown and Moord pushed the Fords ahead 13-7. York stayed within striking distance, trimming the lead to 21-19, which prompted a Haverford timeout. Jones responded with a crucial kill to extend the lead, and a bad set from York made it 23-19. Despite York closing the gap to 23-21, Jones and Brown came through in the clutch to secure a 25-22 win, sealing the match for the Fords. Haverford hit an impressive .452 in the final frame, with 18 kills.

Haverford 3, Arcadia 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20)

Against the host Knights, the Fords maintained their momentum, erasing an early 3-0 deficit with a sustained run that forced an Arcadia timeout with Haverford in control at 17-10. Back-to-back service aces from Cheney extended the lead to 18-10, and a block by Jones and Potocnjak stretched the advantage to 21-14. Brown added a pair of kills to close out a 25-17 first set win.

Arcadia kept things tight in the second set, staying level at 6-6 early. However, a 4-0 run by the Fords forced an Arcadia timeout as Haverford pulled ahead 18-14. Potocnjak followed with a kill, but the Knights pulled within four after a service error. Lucas and Brown delivered consecutive kills to give the Fords set point, and a block by Frank and Moord clinched the set at 25-19, giving Haverford a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Haverford came out firing, racing to a 12-4 lead after a service ace from Chu, prompting another Arcadia timeout. The Knights battled back, closing the gap to 19-16, forcing a Haverford timeout. The teams traded runs, but Haverford took control, prompting a final Arcadia timeout with the Fords up 23-19. Jones and an Arcadia error capped a 25-20 set win, completing the sweep for the Fords.

The Fords now return home for a busy homestand, beginning with a Wednesday evening showdown against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz at 7 p.m. They will then host Christopher Newport in a doubleheader on Saturday, September 21 (11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.).
