SAAC names Alter Featured Student-Athlete

Senior baseball player Jake Alter has been named the Haverford Featured Student-Athlete. He is a switch-hitting outfielder coming off a 1-for-3 performance in Haverford’s 19-6 victory over Eastern on March 22.

Alter is a four-year varsity player who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the team throughout his time in the program.

“Jake is a terrific teammate who works hard to model a positive example for our team,” said head coach Dave Beccaria. “He’s developed into a senior leader who helps make everyone around him better, and he’s an extremely valuable part of our team.”

Head strength & conditioning coach Cory Walts echoes Becarria’s praise of Jake’s work ethic and team-first attitude.

“Jake has always been a rock for the baseball team in the weight room,” Walts said. “His effort and focus never waiver despite what is going on outside of his training routine. Jake is always asking questions and making suggestions, as not only is he trying to get better, but he’s trying to make those around him better. Jake has been, and will always be, a pleasure to work with.”

Alter is a religion major and is working on his thesis, which examines the Islamic nature of Hezbollah’s resistance movement, primarily through the rhetoric of its leadership. This past summer he worked as an intern at the Social Science Research Council as well as the American Jewish Committee. In the summer of 2009, he interned on Capital Hill at the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe: a Congressional commission devoted to addressing and assessing democratic, economic, security and human rights developments in Europe. He plans on pursuing a career in Middle East foreign policy after graduating this spring.

The SAAC is the College’s student-athlete advisory committee which discusses issues that affect the well-being of Haverford’s student-athletes on campus and within the Centennial Conference and the NCAA. For more information, please check out the SAAC website.
