HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team continued to grow its program record as it recorded its 13th straight Centennial Conference victory at home with a 3-0 win over Washington College on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the No. 8 Fords (6-1-2, 3-0 CC) also took over sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference standings.
After two straight contests with late goals being the deciding factor in 1-0 wins, Haverford wasted little time against Washington College as Tejan Walcott put home the game-winning goal just 9:15 into regulation. William Edwards and Nick Jannelli also scored to help put the conference victory away. Sam Miller made three saves to record his fourth shutout of the season and the team's sixth overall on a slick field.
Walcott opened the scoring as part of Haverford's early blitz against the Shormen. Following two chances from Haverford that missed high and wide, Walcott took a cross from Ben Field to knock home his second goal of the season from six yards out. Field made the cross after beating his defender to the end line for his second assist of the year.
The Fords started the first 45 minutes of play with an 11-1 advantage in shots. That persistence paid off again in the 25th minute when William Edwards fired a shot from 30 yards out to beat the keeper in unassisted fashion. Edwards' goal was the first of his career. The Fords nearly made it 3-0 before the break but an unlucky bounce saw Walcott's bid at a second goal bounce off the post while just four minutes later Max Krieg just missed to the outside of the far post.
A second unassisted goal from distance was Haverford's final tally of the evening. Jannelli tied Field for the team lead in both goals and points as he scored on a direct kick from about 35 yards out. Jannelli also has two assists on the season for a total of 10 points in his freshman season.
Haverford finished the game with a 15-6 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Both Jannelli and Walcott finished the evening with a game-high four shots. Three other players, including Edwards, took two shots for the Fords.
Men's soccer will be back at home this Saturday as the team hosts Gettysburg with Senior Day festivities to take place before the 3:30 p.m. start. Haverford now has sole possession of first place after Gettysburg suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Johns Hopkins this evening.
