WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College men's soccer team (2-8-5, 0-4-2 CC) picked up its second Centennial Conference point of the season, drawing level with McDaniel (7-5-2, 2-3-1 CC) by a score of 1-1 at the McDaniel Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Fords began the contest on the attack early as shots by Gabe Knopf in the 11th minute and Max Lovinger in the 13th minute tested McDaniel's Tate Roth, but did not find the back of the net. The Green Terror's first shot of the game came from the foot of AJ Nordone in the 15th minute, however first-year goalkeeper Jackson Simon made a diving stop to parry the chance away from danger.
The 26th minute saw Aidan Lacy unleash a teasing strike from outside the box, however Roth was able to shuffle towards his right to make the stop. With just 9:39 remaining in the half, the hosts struck first off a corner kick. Simon was able to knock down the initial cross as the ball bounced towards the top of the box. Brandon Morse hammered a shot on frame that was blocked by Simon, however, Nick Lewis was there to tap in the rebound to give the Green Terror a 1-0 lead.
After trailing 1-0 at the halftime break, the Scarlet and Black found their equalizer in the 55th minute. Following some heavy pressure from the top of attack, Lacy stole the ball away deep in McDaniel's end. Lacy slotted a ball towards the top of the box from the flank, where Juan Rivera hit a one-time curling shot past Roth to knot the game at 1-1.
The Fords continued to knock on the doorstep during the second half, as shots on frame by Oscar Guardo in the 76th minute, and Thomas Vanni in the 77th minute kept Roth on his toes. The Green Terror keeper was able to keep the game equal.
Simon was then called into action late, denying two shots from A.J. Reta, before Vanni unleashed one last shot on target with just 15 seconds left. Despite the pressure, both keepers stood tall, as McDaniel and Haverford ended the game in a 1-1 draw.
The Scarlet and Black outshot the Green Terror 18-14, with Vanni tallying a game high six shots, while placing four of those attempts on frame. Simon had a busy day in net for the Fords, denying six attempts by McDaniel.
Men's Soccer will wrap up a quick two-game road swing in Collegeville, Pa., on Wednesday, October 23, as the Fords will take on Centennial Conference foe Ursinus at 7:30 p.m.
