Shane Rineer Resigns as Head Men's Soccer Coach

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College men's soccer head coach Shane Rineer has announced his resignation in order to accept the top assistant coaching position at Colgate University. Rineer, who began his tenure in 2011, compiled an 87-38-13 record overall with a 42-16-4 mark against Centennial Conference competition. He was named the United Soccer Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year following the record-breaking 2015 season and was honored as the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year following championship seasons in 2015 and 2016.

"The men's soccer team achieved significant academic and athletic success during Shane's tenure," said Haverford College Director of Athletics Wendy Smith '87. "He did an outstanding job establishing our men's soccer program as a regional and national power and left a strong foundation upon which to build in the coming years. I am certainly disappointed to see Shane leave, but am grateful for all he did for Haveford men's soccer and wish him nothing but the best in his new position and future coaching endeavors."

The Fords made the Centennial Conference Tournament in each of Rineer's seven years as head coach, playing for the conference title in five of those seasons while winning the first three Centennial Conference Championships in program history (2012, 2015, and 2016). His teams also finished first in the regular season standings three times. The team's three NCAA Tournament appearances were highlighted by hosting the NCAA Tournament regional and sectional rounds on Walton Field during the postseason run to the Elite 8 in 2015.

Sam Yarosh '16, the 2015 Centennial Conference Player & Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was also the program's first All-American since the 1984 season. Under Rineer's guidance, Yarosh and Will Corkery '17 were recognized as All-Americans and were both awarded the Varsity Cup as the outstanding student-athletes in the Haverford College senior class upon their graduation. Men's soccer saw its team combine for 36 All-Centennial Conference selections during the past seven years, with 12 first-team selections. Nick Jannelli '20 and Dorian Wirz '18 were named Centennial Conference Rookies of the Year while Macklin Willigan '17 and Corkery were selected as Centennial Conference Tournament MVPs.

In the classroom, Rineer's squad earned the United Soccer Coaches Association Team Academic Award during each of his seven seasons. His student-athletes combined for 72 selections to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor, the most of any team in the conference during that time. Haverford also had 10 players voted to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team with Yarosh being named the Academic All-Area Performer of the Year across all sports in the Philadelphia area as a senior. That same year, Yarosh won an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was named a first-team Academic All-American by both CoSIDA and the United Soccer Coaches Association.

A national search will be undertaken for Rineer's replacement.
