HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Haverford College men's soccer team began a tough stretch of games on Wednesday afternoon with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Stevens. Starting off a stretch in which the Fords (2-2) will play four straight NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago, the host Ducks (5-1) scored the match's first three goals before the Fords tallied with eight seconds remaining in regulation time.

In spite of the final score, the remaining offensive statistics revealed a tight non-conference matchup that has come to be expected when these teams meet on the pitch. Stevens finished with just a 13-12 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kick attempts. The Fords' goal came on the final shot of the game as Alex Clark scored off an assist from Meinhardt Rentrup.

Haverford had more shot attempts and corner kick opportunities during the first 45 minutes of play, but it was Stevens with a 1-0 lead after the first half of play. The Ducks struck first during the 18th minute of play. Stevens also scored just over two minutes into the second half before finding its third goal in the 66th minute of play.

The Fords took four more shots and had four additional attempts at a corner kick over the final 20 minutes. That persistence paid off on the final corner of the afternoon. Following the initial insert from Aditya Dias, Rentrup played a nice pass to the foot of Clark who buried his shot in the right hand side of the goal. Clark's goal was the first of the senior's career while Rentrup's helper marked the first year's first career offensive point.

Michael Carr finished with a team-high four shots on the evening, putting two of those attempts on goal. Sykes Cargile also had two runs towards goal, with one of those attempts ultimately denied by the Stevens goalie. Michael Iacono played the full 90 minutes in net for the Fords as he made two saves.

Men's soccer will return home this Saturday for the start of Centennial Conference play when defending conference champion and nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins comes to Walton Field for a 2 p.m. start. That matchup will pit the last two teams to hoist the conference trophy against each other in a key early season battle.
