Jannelli's Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer Past Hampden-Sydney, 3-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Nick Jannelli recorded the first hat trick of his decorated collegiate career to lead the Haverford College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney College Sunday afternoon during the second day of the Jimmy Mills Classic. Each of Jannelli's goals during his career day came on free kick opportunities as he scored twice during the opening half on direct kicks just outside of the 18. His final tally came via a penalty kick early in the second half.

Jannelli's hat trick on Sunday gives him nine multi-goal games throughout his career as he had scored two goals in eight different contests entering play this afternoon. His five goals and 11 points through the first three matches of the 2019 season are both leading the Centennial Conference to pick up right where he left off a season ago. The Fords' senior captain now has 39 career goals and ranks eighth in school history as he passed Dave Kelly's '88 37 career goals this afternoon. Next up on the all-time list are Sturgis Poorman '67 and Kurt Gaugler '94 who each scored 42 during their respective careers. Jannelli now has 95 career points and is looking to become just the sixth player in program history to hit the 100-point plateau.

Haverford's first goal came on the Fords' first offensive chance as Hampden-Sydney was whistled for a foul 30 yards away from the goal. Jannelli buried that chance to add to his program record with the 15th game-winning goal of his career. During the 31st minute of play, Jannelli again connected from right around the 30 yard mark as his shot found the upper 90.

Just under seven minutes into the second half, Haverford had a player taken down inside of the 18 to set up the chance for Haverford's first hat trick since former No. 7 Sam Yarosh '16 scored three times at Rosemont during the 2015 season. Jannelli has now converted 10 penalty kicks into goals out of 11 chances during his career. Both of those marks are also program records.

While Jannelli provided more than enough offense for the Fords on Sunday, it was Hampden-Sydney that finished the match with a 12-8 advantage in total shots. However, the Haverford defense only allowed five of those attempts to reach the intended target. Michael Iacono got the start in goal for the Fords and came up with three saves in his nearly 60 minutes of playing time before Dylan Ioffreda played the final 30-plus minutes and recorded a pair of stops during the combined shutout effort.

Men's soccer will have a nearly full week of preparation before the Fords' five-match home stand to open up the season continues next Saturday, September 14 with a 2:30 p.m. start against Wilkes. That contest will be proceeded by the women's team taking on Widener in a 12 p.m. noon start on Walton Field.
