HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's soccer team (1-7-4, 0-3-1 CC) dropped a Centennial Conference matchup to No. 9 Dickinson (10-1-1, 2-1-1 CC), by a score of 2-1 on Walton Field Saturday afternoon. The contest also served as Haverford's annual Play with Pride game, celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Haverford Athletics and broader college athletics community.
The Red Devils dominated possession for a majority of the first half, however, the Fords kept the visitors to just four opening shots. Despite the Scarlet and Black withstanding the pressure, Dickinson finally broke through in the 38th minute. Off a goal kick, a headed ball bounced to Ethan Jarden in the middle of the pitch. Jarden got onto the ball, ran up 20 yards, and blasted a shot from outside the box past Jackson Simon, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Red Devils held a 9-0 shot advantage. Haverford then began to pepper the net, with shots coming from Joey Carol, Kieran Kunihiro, and Gabe Knopf.
However, just as Haverford looked like they were beginning to find an offensive rhythm, Dickinson dealt the Fords a setback with their second goal of the game in the 60th minute. Following a defensive stand by the visitors, Jarden received a pass from the backline and began to sprint up the field. Jarden finessed a pass down the field to the feet of Saul Iwowo, who eventually placed a shot behind Simon into the back of the net to push the Red Devil lead to 2-0.
Showing the never say die attitude, the Scarlet and Black found a crucial goal in the 79th minute. Following a foul in the center circle, a free kick was lifted into the box. Pavel Yurkov got a head on it, as the ball then bounced off Oscar Guardo to the feet of Aidan Rodriguez. The first-year rifled a shot to the far post, beating Dickinson goalkeeper Aidan George to score his first goal of the season, trimming the Red Devil lead down to 2-1.
A shot from Aidan Lacy and a header from Keiran Kunihiro in the final few minutes were denied by George, as Dickinson was able to hold on to the 2-1 victory.
The visitors were able to outshoot the Fords in the matchup 19-7 (8-3 shots on goal), with Kunihiro pacing the hosts in shots with two. In between the posts, Simon was able to turn away six of the eight shots on frame.
The Scarlet and Black will now have to wait eight days before their next contest, as Washington College will pay Walton Field a visit on Sunday, October 13, at 3 p.m.
