Men's tennis rallies for win over Red Devils

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A late rally winning the final two singles matches pushed the Haverford College men's tennis team past visiting Dickinson College Saturday afternoon in a 5-4 Centennial Conference victory at the Bramall Courts.

Natty Sergay provided the winning point for the Fords (4-3, 1-2 CC) over the Red Devils (6-6, 1-2 CC) but key matches preceding that duel at No. 4 singles set up Sergay's heroics.

Haverford was behind 2-1 after doubles play then dropped to a 3-1 deficit with Dickinson's singles win at No. 6.

Kevin Caulfield began the comeback for the Fords with a quick, 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 1, then Will Garrett pulled Haverford even at 3-3 with a two-set win at No. 3.

The Red Devils picked up a win at No. 5 to move within one point from the match victory but it wasn't without a fight as Haverford's Ankur Arya fought off three match points before falling to Bo Marshall in a tie-break.

In must-win situations, both Hailiu Yang and Sergay were the last two Fords out on the courts trying to prevent the Red Devils from acquiring that final win.

Yang played perhaps the most tense match of the day pulling out a pair of tie-break wins in his 2-0 win over Dickinson's Hunter Holbrook at No. 2, evening the team score at 4-4 with Sergay and Pavel Hejsek still battling in the No. 4 singles match.

Hejsek had won the first set, 6-3, but Sergay bounced back with a 6-2 second set victory setting up a winner-take-all third set.

Even through much of the early going, Sergay finally edged ahead then captured the match, and ultimately the team victory, with a 7-5 win.

The league victory was the first of the year for Haverford, the 11th-ranked team in the Atlantic-South Region.

The Fords hit the road for the next match, a Centennial contest against host Ursinus College at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
