COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's tennis team is now one win away from securing a spot in the Centennial Conference tournament after defeating host Ursinus, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon.
The Fords, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South Region, improve to 8-8 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial. A win by Haverford in its final match, a home contest against Swarthmore on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m., locks up a tournament spot.
Haverford swept all three doubles matches. Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himmelstein teamed up for an 8-3 win in the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 team of Matt Romei and Matthew Cebuk picked up an 8-4 victory. Hailiu Yang and Andy Doughtery were victorious on the No. 3 match, 8-1.
In singles, Caulfield and Evan Stutchin battled in an epic three-hour No. 1 match. Caulfield, ranked 14th in the region, came out on top 6-7 (9-11), 7-6 (10-8), 1-0 (12-10). Yang, Dougherty, Romei and Robert Homan all won their matches in straight sets.
Ursinus is now 11-8 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
