Men’s tennis takes down Division II University of the Sciences, 5-3

HAVERFORD, Pa. –Not even a Division II program could cool off the Haverford College men's tennis team as it defeated visiting University of the Sciences, 7-2, in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Bramall Courts.

The Fords earned their sixth consecutive win and improved their overall record to 7-5. Haverford is 15th in the Atlantic South Region rankings. The Devils, ranked seventh in the East Region, are now 6-4. The Fords have won their last seven matches against the Devils dating back to 2002.

The Fords got off to a strong start by taking two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 match, Kevin Caulfield and Kevin Cebul defeated Alvaro Vargas and David Kazekevich, 8-4. Ankur Arya and Joseph Tan narrowly escaped with an 8-6 win in the No. 3 match against Roger Van Scyoc and P.J. Bedway.

In singles play, Caulfield improved to 8-3 in the No. 1 position after picking up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Vargas. Hailiu Yang was pushed to the brink, but prevailed against Kazekevich in the No. 2 slot, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 1-0 (7-2). Will Garrett was victorious in the No. 4 match-up, 7-5, 6-1 against Billy Fine.

Haverford returns to Centennial Conference play Saturday, April 9, when it hosts Johns Hopkins University beginning at noon.
