Men's tennis splits singles play but falls to Chapman in California

ORANGE, Calif. – The Haverford College men's tennis team picked up three wins in singles play Thursday night against host Chapman University, but the Panthers' lead after the doubles matches proved to be to great to overcome in the Fords' 6-3 loss.

Haverford (0-3) earned its three points against the Panthers (2-3) at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles slots.

Kevin Caulfield blazed through his No. 1 singles match securing a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory against Chapman's Andre Herd. Matt Romei also added a point in straight sets for the Fords but had to battle through a tie-break in the second set for the victory after opening with a 6-2 win over the Panthers' Kevin Smyth.

Andy Dougherty fought back from a 1-6 first set loss to capture Haverford's third point. Giovanni Villicana made quick work of Dougherty, 6-1, in the first set behind his big serve. Dougherty kept himself in the the second set and eventually pulled away for a 6-3 win to even the match, then closed it out with a 6-2, third set triumph.

The Fords will close out their spring break trip to the West Coast with a challenging match Saturday afternoon against the No. 3 team in the country, Claremont Mudd-Scripps College.
