Fords in the hunt, but falter in men's tennis match against rival Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Moral victories don't add into season records, but the Haverford College men's tennis team put up a solid effort Saturday afternoon in its 7-2 Centennial Conference loss to rival Swarthmore College.

The Fords (8-9, 6-2 CC) were on the verge of winning two of three doubles matches against the Garnet (11-6, 7-1) but were unable to break through, and headed into singles play trailing by a 3-0 score.

Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein forced Swarthmore's No. 1 doubles pairing of Zak Kelm and Stephen Youngblood into an extra game before the visitors stole away with a 9-7 win. Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei did the same in the second doubles flight falling to a Swarthmore tandem by the same score.

Caulfield broke through for the Fords' first point of the day with a 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles over Max Kaye. Romei earned the second point for the Fords at four-singles.

Romei dropped the initial set of his match to Max Bressman but rallied for a 7-6 win in the second and took the super-tiebreaker 1-0 (10-8) to complete the come-back.

Haverford now moves into the league tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seed Washington College Wednesday afternoon on the Bramall Courts. The Fords defeated the visiting Shoremen by a score of 6-3 earlier in the season.
