Seven from men's tennis earn ITA scholar honors, team named all-academic squad

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Haverford College men's tennis team earned inclusion on the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III All-Academic Team, as announced by the organization Thursday evening. Seven individuals from the Fords' team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes as well.

To be eligible for the team award a squad must possess a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better. Individual honorees must be a letter winner and have earned a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Haverford finished the year ranked 14th in the ITA Atlantic South Region after playing its way into the Centennial Conference tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons.

Scholar-athlete honors went to senior Hailiu Yang, juniors Ankur Arya, Will Garrett and Natty Sergay, sophomores Matthew Cebul and Jacob Weisenthal, and freshman Matt Romei.

Yang, a Centennial all-academic team selection, was the conference's male recipient of the 2011 Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Award. The team's captain, Yang was entrenched in the No. 2 singles slot for the Fords in 2011 and teamed with Garrett at No. 3 doubles. Garrett saw singles action during the spring in the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 spots.

Sergay played in the third, fourth and fifth singles spots for Haverford and teamed with Romei in the No. 2 doubles position. Romei also played in the Nos. 4 and 5 singles slots.

Cebul split time at No. 2 doubles with Romei and Sergay and earned a singles win at 6-singles. Arya saw court time in the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots and Weisenthal played Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

Cebul, Garrett, Sergay and Weisenthal joined Yang on the conference all-academic list.
