Shoremen fight off Haverford rally

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Trailing by three points, Haverford College's men's tennis team captured consecutive singles matches to pull within a point of host Washington College on Wednesday evening, but the Shoreman clinched the match victory with a win at No. 5 singles to pull out what would eventually become a 5-4 Centennial Conference victory over the Fords inside the Johhnson Fitness Center.

Haverford (4-4, 1-1 CC) earned the match's first point of the day with a win from Will Garrett and Natty Sergay at 3-doubles, but Washington (4-4, 2-1) broke ahead, 2-1, with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.

Wins at 3- and 4-singles pushed the Shoremen's lead to 4-1 but Haverford battled back to within a point.

Sergay defeated Dan Boate at No. 2 in straight sets for the Fords' first singles victory, and Kevin Caulfield followed with a lengthy, come-from-behind 2-1 victory at 1-singles over the Shoremen's Kevin Papen. The wins drew Haverford to within a point, with two matches left on the courts.

Kyle Lisco out lasted a gritty Garrett at No. 5, though, to clinch the match for the hosts. Matthew Cebul won 2-0 at No. 6 for Haverford in the day's final match.

The Fords, ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic South Region rankings, continue conference action with their next match, a home outing Saturday at noon against the Red Devils from Dickinson College.
