Doubles lineup leads Fords in win over USciences

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Three quick wins in doubles action Tuesday afternoon helped lead the Haverford College men's tennis team to a 7-2 non-conference victory over the visiting Devils from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) on the Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center courts in Alumni Field House.

Haverford (8-5), ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Division III Atlantic South region, picked up the clinching fifth point with Matthew Cebul's straight-set win over USP's Bill Fine at No. 4 singles. USciences (4-7) is ranked eighth in the ITA D-II East region.

Robert Homan and Devin Van Dyke opened the scoring for Haverford with an 8-3 win at 3-doubles. The tandem of Andy Dougherty and Matt Romei captured the next point for the Fords at No. 2 with an 8-5 win, and the 1-doubles pairing of Kevin Caulfield and Natty Sergay won by the same score to sweep the doubles points for the home team.

Cebul's match-clinching point followed Dougherty's 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Caulfield was the Fords' other double-winner capturing No. 1 singles with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win.

Haverford slips back into Centennial Conference action with its next match, Saturday, against visiting Franklin & Marshall College.
