The College of New Jersey ends Haverford win streak

EWING, N.J. – Haverford College's three-match win streak came to an end Wednesday with an 8-1 loss at The College of New Jersey in a non-conference men's tennis match. Reigning Centennial Conference player of the week Kevin Caulfield picked up the Fords' lone point with his win at No.1  singles.

The Lions from TCNJ (9-3) roared to a 3-0 start by sweeping the doubles matches. Will Garrett and Andy Dougherty battled for a Haverford (10-6) point at No. 3 but eventually fell 9-8 (7-4) in the tie-breaker.

Caulfield swept Steven Fernadez, 6-1, 6-3, at 1-singles to get the Fords a point but that would be the only marker in the match for the visitors.

A gritty Dougherty suffered more heart break in singles play at No. 3. He took Howard Telson to a tie-break in the first set before falling 7-6 (7-4), then pushed Telson throughout the second set only to drop a 7-5 decision.

The Fords close out their regular season on Saturday against host Swarthmore College which is also 6-2 within the league and tied with the Fords -- and Washington College -- for second in the league.
