#16 Hopkins prevents upset by Fords

BALTIMOMRE, Md. – A strong showing in the quarterfinal round buoyed the hopes of Haverford College's men's tennis team as it headed into Saturday afternoon's semifinal round of the Centennial Conference tournament, but host and 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins University sank the Fords' upset hopes with a 5-1 win.

Haverford (11-8) picked up its point in doubles action where Will Garrett and Natty Sergay teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Hopkins' Tanner Brown and Erik Lim. The Blue Jays (16-4) captured the other two doubles matches to carry a 2-1 advantage into singles play.

Hopkins picked up its needed three points with wins at 6-, 2- and 4-singles to move onto the championship on Sunday when it will square off against visiting Swarthmore College, winners over Franklin & Marshall College in the other semifinal.

The loss ends the regular season for Haverford but Kevin Caulfield, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic South region in singles, is hoping for an invite to the NCAA singles championship.
