Caulfield heads into Regional semifinals, Weisenthal captures B3 title

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The second day of the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) and Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) 2012 Division III Men's Southeast Regional Championship concluded Sunday with stellar results for the Haverford College men's tennis team as Jacob Weisenthal cruised to win the title of the B3 singles tournament and Kevin Caulfield sailed into Monday's semifinal round of the Championship singles tournament. The Regional is being hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Weisenthal downed Anthony Rosselli of Grove City College in the opening round of the B3 tournament Saturday morning then advanced to Sunday's action by taking down Matt Tuorto of Moravian College on Saturday afternoon.

In Sunday's semifinal match Weisenthal won a quick 6-2, 6-2 decision over Adam Goldberger of Salisbury University in the morning to forge a match-up against Ursinus College's Tyler Arsenault in the afternoon's B3 championship. Weisenthal captured the title downing Arsenault by the same score as his semifinal victory over Goldberger.

Five Fords began Saturday in the Championship singles tournament but Caulfield is the last man standing for Haverford. Caulfield dispatched a pair of opponents Saturday in straight sets both times, dropping a total of six games during his pair of 2-0 victories.

In Sunday morning's round of 16, Caulfield fell behind for the first time at the Regional dropping the opening set, 7-5, to Sam Weissler of Johns Hopkins. The Haverford senior responded with 6-1, 6-1 wins in the second and third sets to sail past Weissler into the quarterfinals where another Blue Jay, Erick Lim, awaited.

Caulfield raced to a 1-0 lead in the afternoon quarterfinal, dropping Lim by a 6-2 count but the Hopkins player evened the match with a 6-3 second-set victory. Caulfield rallied from the set loss by rolling to a 6-0 win to capture the match and move into the semifinal round on Monday when he will go up against his third straight Johns Hopkins opponent, Andy Hersh, at 9:30 a.m.

Also achieving success in the Championship bracket was the Fords' Luis Acaba who picked up Saturday wins in the round of 64 and round of 32 before falling to Tanner Brown of Johns Hopkins in Sunday's round of 16.

Andy Dougherty, Matt Romei and Zack Mason all lost in the round of 64 but Dougherty defeated Moravian's John Wylie in the first round of the consolation bracket before dropping out with a hard-fought loss in the second round.

In other singles action for Haverford, Matthew Cebul downed Andrew Gear of St. Mary's College (Md.) in the B1 singles bracket opening round before bowing out with a loss in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Sloan Millman posted an opening round win in the B2 singles bracket but also came up short in a quarterfinal match.

In doubles action on Saturday, the pairing of Caulfield and Danny Himelstein picked up wins in the opening round of 32 and round of 16 to move into Sunday's quarterfinal round of the Championship tournament. The pair were unable to advance further, though, dropping an 8-5 decision to Hopkins' Hersh and Jeff Kamei on Sunday morning.

Haverford's Cebul and Romei also won their opening round match in the Championship bracket Saturday but dropped out with a loss in the round of 16.

Acaba teamed with Mason to capture a round of 16 win in the B1 doubles bracket but fell out in the quarterfinal round.
