ORANGE, Calif. – The first match of its spring break trip to California for Haverford College's men's tennis team ended with a narrow 5-4 loss to host Chapman University in a non-conference contest that went down to the final singles match on the Panthers' courts.

Chapman (3-2) carried a 2-1 advantage into singles play after surrendering only a loss to Haverford's Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein at the No. 1 doubles slot.

The Fords (0-3) fell behind 3-1 after a singles loss at No. 4 but pulled even at 3-3 with straight set victories by Caulfield at No. 1 and Luis Acaba at 2-singles. Both wins by the Haverford pair were commanding as Caulfield gave up only two games against Chapman's Troy Akin, and Acaba surrendered just three games to Kyle Coates.

The Panthers pulled within a point of the match victory with a straight-set win at 3-singles but Zack Mason drew Haverford even again by winning 6-2, 6-2 against Chris Williams at No. 5.

The match came down to the last two players on the court -- Haverford's Sloan Millman and Chapman's Sam Farzani -- and the Panthers' Farzani was able to hold off Millman by scores of 6-2, 6-2 to close out the win for the home team.

Haverford continues its West Coast trip on Thursday with a match against host and 27th-ranked Whittier College.
