Caulfield repeats as academic all-area performer of year

PHILADELPHIA – For the second year in a row, Haverford College's Kevin Caulfield has been voted the Philadelphia Inquirer's academic all-area performer of the year in men's tennis.

The six-man all-area team for 2013 was released Monday morning by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

In order to be eligible for academic all-area, an athlete must be in at least his second year at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In late May Caulfield closed out his senior campaign at Haverford by earning his first visit to the NCAA's national singles tournament where he won his opening match in the round of 32 to earn All-American status. His opponent in the round of 16, Adam Putterman of Washington (Mo.) University, went on to capture the 2013 singles title.

With 57 career singles victories while at Haverford, Caulfield climbed into a tie for second-most in program history. His total of 39 doubles wins ties for seventh-most.

Prior to his trip to nationals, Caulfield earned his fourth consecutive first-team All-Centennial Conference honor in singles play while adding his third straight first-team doubles honor with playing partner Danny Himelstein.

The Centennial also selected Caulfield as the league's sportsmanship award winner, and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named him the Atlantic South Region recipient of the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award.

Late last week the ITA released its final national and regional rankings. Caulfield was 42nd nationally and ninth in in the Atlantic South's singles list. He and Himelstein finished 25th nationally and fifth in the region in doubles.

At Haverford's senior athlete award ceremony on May 4, Caulfield was presented with the Varsity Cup, given annually to the outstanding athlete or athletes in the senior class. Caulfield shared the honor with field hockey's Mary Hobbs, and Jordan Schilit from the men's cross country and track & field teams.
