Luis Acaba Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area

Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Luis Acaba has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team for the first time in his career. Acaba is one of six student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Tennis Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

Now a rising senior with a major in psychology, Acaba was named first-team All-Centennial Conference in both singles and doubles this past season. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native, playing the No. 1 position in both single and doubles, racked up eight victories in singles and eight more in doubles. Included in his 16-11 record between singles and doubles was an 11-4 combined mark in Centennial Conference play. Teaming up with Harrison Elbert at No. 1 doubles, the Fords' top pairing went 6-2 in Centennial Conference matches. The pairing's success was highlighted by a win over then-No. 11 Johns Hopkins' top doubles team.

In singles, Acaba has risen to his current position of No. 24 in the ITA's Atlantic South Individual Rankings. He also earned first-team All-CC honors in singles last year to go along with his second team mention and CC Rookie of the Year honors during the 2013 season. Acaba was also named second-team All-CC in doubles during the 2014 season and was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll during the spring semester.

Acaba is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer  Academic All-Area Men's Tennis team by Saint Joseph's teammates Kyle Chalmers and Andres Urrea, Temple's Maros Januvka, Swarthmore's Harrison Lands, and Drexel's Badr Ouabdelmoumen. Chalmers was named the 2015 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Tennis Performer of the Year.
