RIO PIEDRAS, Puerto Rico – The Haverford College men's tennis team completed a successful week in Puerto Rico by sweeping Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Friday. The Fords (2-1) did not drop a set in defeating the local University in their final full day outside of the continental United States.
The Fords played strong in doubles throughout the week and Friday was no exception. With the three convincing wins against Rio Piedras, the Fords finished 6-0 in doubles action for the week. Luis Acaba and Harrison Elbert completed their 2-0 week together with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Josh Moskovitz and Dais Nakayama also notched their second straight victory together in the middle pairing with an 8-1 victory. In the No. 3 doubles position, Eli Phelps saw his first action in the varsity lineup during an 8-1 win. His victory came with Ishaan Prinz as his doubles teammate.
Haverford found just as much success in singles play as the Fords did not drop a set after playing numerous 10-point tiebreaks during the victory against Sacred Heart. Playing near his hometown for one last time in a Haverford uniform, Acaba ran his individual record to 3-0 during the spring season. Acaba allowed just four games to Rio Piedras' No. 1 player as he won 6-3, 6-1.
Also remaining unbeaten in singles during the early portion of the spring season was Moskovitz. The Fords' freshman allowed the fewest games on the team during Friday's dual meet. He conceded just two games, one in each set, for his third win of the season. The tightest match of the afternoon was still a straight set win for the Fords. Completing a personal 2-0 week in his senior campaign, Zack Mason won 6-4, 6-3 as he played No. 5 singles.
Sophomores Nakayama and Prinz delivered the victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Nakayama used back-to-back 6-3 sets in his first win of the spring season. Prinz also allowed just six games to his opponent during a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Haverford got a win at No. 6 singles when Nick Sweeney's opponent was forced to retire with an injury after the two split their first service games.
Men's tennis will now return to campus where it will host three straight matches to close out the month of March. Up first will be a matchup against Wilkes that is set for Saturday, March 19. First serves in that match are scheduled for 12 p.m.
