Fords jump ahead in day 1 of Centennial meet

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – With one day and two events in the books, the Haverford College men's track & field team leads the pack after the opening session of the 2012 Centennial Conference championship meet hosted by Ursinus College.

The first points for Haverford came from Michael Iannacone who finished third in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches).

The Fords piled on the points in the other event final of the day, the men's 10,000 meter run as Jordan Schilit led a parade of teammates across the finish with a winning time of 31 minutes, 35.39 seconds.

Andrew Sturner was third followed by Faraz Sohail in fourth, Brian Sokas in fifth and Peter Kissin in sixth, providing Haverford with five of the eight scoring positions.

The Fords accumulated 34 points on the first of the three-day championship. Johns Hopkins University scored 19 points and was followed by Muhlenberg College in third with 12, and host Ursinus in fourth with 11.5 points.

The championship continues Saturday at 8:45 a.m. with the concluding events of the men's decathlon. The 4x800 relay finishes off the day at approximately 4:20 p.m.
