Pair of Fords selected to Philly Inquirer's academic all-area men's track team

PHILADELPHIA – Haverford College seniors Tim Schoch and Andrew Sturner have been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer 2012 Academic All-Area Men's Track & Field Team, as announced Monday by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

Eligible athletes for the all-academic squad must be in at least their second year at the nominating institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. Voting for the team is conducted by the sports information offices of the 28 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Schoch, an English major who was the 2011 academic all-area men's track performer of the year, earned his third and fourth career All-American honors during his senior year with a third-place finish in the 800 meter run at the NCAA 2012 Division III indoor track championship and a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 at the outdoor national meet.

At the 2012 outdoor Centennial Conference championship meet, Schoch captured the league title in the 800 for the fourth consecutive year and was second in the 1,500. He won the 800 and the mile at the indoor Centennial championship becoming the first athlete in conference history to take home the 800/mile double twice in a career. Schoch earned Centennial academic honor roll recognition all nine times he was eligible for the honor and in May was announced as the athletic department's Varsity Cup awardee given annually to the most outstanding Haverford athlete in the graduating class.

Sturner is making his first appearance on the track all-area team after being voted the Inquirer's 2011 academic all-area cross country performer of the year.

A 2011 cross country all-American, Sturner added another all-American honor to his mantle at the NCAA's 2012 outdoor track championship where he raced to a sixth-place finish in the 10,0000 on the opening night of the three-day meet.

A physics and astronomy major, Sturner also earned Centennial honor roll selection nine times during his career at Haverford. At the 2012 outdoor Centennial meet he ran to a third-place finish in the 10,000 and seventh-place finish in the 5,000. At the indoor conference championship he was sixth in both the 3,000 and 5,000.

Schoch and Sturner were part of Haverford teams that swept through the 2011-12 year with three Centennial titles as the Fords wore the cross country, indoor and outdoor track league crowns.
