PHILADELPHIA – Haverford College's Avi Bregman, Peter Kissin and Christopher Stadler have been voted onto the Philadelphia Inquirer's 2013 Academic All-Area Men's Track & Field Team, as released Thursday by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).
In order to be eligible for academic all-area, an athlete must be in at least his second year at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Kissin, a senior, raced to a pair of All-American performances at the NCAAA 2013 outdoor track & field championship, finishing fourth in the 10,000-meter run and seventh in the 5,000. He had narrowly missed all-American status at the indoor NCAA championship earlier in the year when he finished ninth in the 5,000.
At the Centennial Conference championships Kissin captured the 5,000 at the indoor meet and was third in the 3,000. He was the runner-up, to Stadler, in the 10,000 and 5,000 at the outdoor league meet.
A nine-time member of the Centennial's academic honor roll, Kissin was also a member of the academic all-area team in cross country and was honored with an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in the fall.
Bregman and Stadler, both juniors, are six-time Centennial academic honor roll selectees.
At this spring's outdoor NCAA championship Bregman earned all-American honors with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He captured the steeplechase title at the 2013 Centennial outdoor meet, for the second consecutive spring, and also finished third in the 5,000. Bregman finished fifth in the 5,000 at the indoor Centennial meet.
Stadler earned an all-American certificate at the NCAA indoor meet by winning the 5,000 then added another certificate with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 at the outdoor NCAA meet.
The Centennial named Stadler the track performer of the meet at both the indoor and outdoor league championships. At the outdoor meet he won the 10,000 and 5,000 in championship meet-record times, and at the indoor meet he captured the title in the 3,000 and was second to Kissin in the 5,000.
In the fall Stadler was voted the academic all-area performer of the year in men's cross country.
Tim VanLiew of Rutgers University-Camden was voted the 2013 academic all-area performer of the year in track & field. He is a two-time NCAA javelin national champion and set the Division III record while winning the 2013 title.
