FORDS FLASHBACK: Paranya Makes DIII History with Sub-4 Mile

Over the course of the summer, Haverford Athletics will continue to dig into the archives to bring you a "Fords Flashback".

May 17, 1997

Karl Paranya '97 made NCAA history on Haverford's own Johnson Track during his senior season when he became the first Division III track athlete to run a sub-4 mile, crossing the line in a time of 3:57.6 Paranya concluded his Haverford career as a nine-time national champion, 15-time All-American, and a six-time Centennial Conference Performer of the Year. His historic mile came during the final home meet of his career. Even following the summer of his junior campaign, Paranya qualified to compete in the 1996 Olympic Trials for the United States of America. He would also qualify for the 2000 Olympic trials. To this day, Paranya is still the Division III record holder in the outdoor 1,500 meter race with a time of 3:39.83, a mark that converts to 3:56.52 in the mile according to MileSplit. Paranya is now one of two Fords to run a sub-4 mile as Charlie Marquardt '16 joined that exclusive club at the Sir Walter Miler in 2018.
