FORDS FLASHBACK: Kevin Foley '83 Wins NCAA Championship on ESPN (1981)

Our final Fords' Flashback takes us to ESPN's coverage of the 1981 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships where Kevin Foley '83 took home his first of three individual national championships.

A three-time national champion in the 1,500 meters, Kevin Foley's '83 first run to an individual championship was captured on ESPN as the Division III Track & Field Championships were showcased on a national stage. At the 1981 national championship, Foley's time of three minutes, 46.46 seconds was the NCAA Championship meet record. He would go on to break that record the following year before winning the 1983 championship just shortly after being on crutches. Foley was the runner-up during his first-year and was the only three-time national champion in that event all the way up until the 2006 championship.

Foley joined his fellow Haverford alumni Seamus McElligott '91 and Karl Paranya '97 in the Division III Hall of Fame in 2018. Those runners have all competed under USTFCCCA Track & Field Hall of Fame Coach Tom Donnelly who is entering his 46th season at Haverford this coming year. Donnelly's athletes have claimed 174 All-American certificates while additionally claiming 29 individual national championships and one relay national championship.
