Women’s basketball fends off feisty Owls, 67-52

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team halted its six-game skid with a 67-52 Centennial Conference victory over Bryn Mawr College Saturday afternoon at Gooding Arena. After the score was tied at the half the Fords exploded for 38 points in the second half and shot 48 percent from the field.

Nina Voith tied career-highs with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Dominique Meeks scored 19 points and missed just two field goals (9-for-11) the entire game. Victoria Sobocinski buried a pair of three's for six points.

Bryn Mawr (1-13, 0-11 CC) was led by Lindsey Darvin's 15 points. Twelve of Darvin's points came from three-point range. Emilie Naccarato added 12 points and Shanika Bridges-King pulled down nine rebounds.

The first half had five tied scores and six lead changes. Both teams shot better than 44 percent from the field, but the difference was the Owls scored 15 points off Haverford (4-9, 2-7 CC) turnovers.

A 6-0 Fords run gave them a 23-18 lead with less than five minutes to go, but a layup by Bridges-King and a trey by Naccarato tied it up. Meeks answered with a three-point play and a three by Calla Miller put HC ahead by three with 1:00 left. Darvin drained a three on Bryn Mawr's final possession to tie the score at 29-all at the intermission.

The Fords jumped out to a 10-point lead seven minutes into the second half thanks to an 11-4 run that included three's by Sobocinski and Voith. Another three by Voith put Haverford ahead, 54-45, with 8:05 on the clock. That sparked a 12-0 run over 5:30 that gave the Scarlet and Black an 18-point lead – their largest of the game. Voith scored 18 second half points and was perfect from beyond the arc (2-for-2) and the foul line (4-for-4).

Haverford is halfway through a four-game homestand and hosts rival Swarthmore College Wednesday in a doubleheader. The women tip at 6 p.m. and the men are slated for 8 p.m.
