WESTMINSTER, Md. — The Haverford College women's basketball team fought valiantly on the road but ultimately fell to McDaniel, 70-49, in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Gill Center on the campus of McDaniel College.
Audrey Jakway led the Fords (9-12, 3-8 CC) with an impressive 18-point, eight-rebound performance, while Brianna Feifer added 16 points and four boards. Despite outscoring the Green Terror in the fourth quarter, Haverford was unable to overcome an early deficit as McDaniel (15-6, 6-4 CC) capitalized on efficient shooting, going 50 percent from the field and three-point range.
Haverford found itself trailing early as McDaniel jumped out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead. Jakway got the Fords on the board with a jumper, and Caroline Orza knocked down a three-pointer late in the period to keep Haverford within striking distance at 14-9 However, McDaniel extended its lead in the second quarter with a barrage of three-pointers from Lauren Cavoli, outscoring the Fords 20-11 in the frame to take a 36-20 advantage into halftime.
The Fords showed resilience in the third quarter, with their forwards contributing with Feifer attacking the paint and Jakway controlling the glass. McDaniel's hot shooting continued as the hosts were able to keep the contest in control, pushing the lead to 55-30 heading into the final frame.
Haverford's strongest offensive stretch came in the fourth quarter, where the visitors outscored McDaniel 19-15. Feifer and Jakway combined for several key baskets, including a pair of triples from Feifer, closing the contest on an 8-2 run.
Orza contributed seven points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Shae Mercer added three assists and a block.
Haverford shot 35.8% (19-for-53) from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, converting just 3-of-13 attempts from three-point land. Meanwhile, McDaniel capitalized on its opportunities and showcased its depth, shooting 50% (29-for-58) and finishing with a 23-0 advantage in bench points.
The Green Terror had a balanced approach to scoring, with Lil Overcash one of three scorers in double figures with 12 points and four assists. Cavoli's three-pointer barrage helped her to 11 points while stalwart Teya McConnaha added 10 points and four rebounds.
Haverford will now look to build on its late-game momentum when it heads out to face Bi-Co neighbor Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 p.m.
