Late run helps Bullets escape women’s basketball, 54-38

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team hung with first-place Gettysburg College until a late run by the Bullets propelled them to a 54-38 Centennial Conference victory Monday evening.

Nina Voith scored a team-high 14 points for Haverford (5-13, 3-11 CC) with 11 coming in the second half. Dominique Meeks added 11 points while Sara Cram collected six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Gettysburg (17-2, 12-2 CC) placed three players in double-figures. Julie McGrory had a game-high 20 points and was one board shy of a double-double. Caitlin Moser tallied 14 points (all in the second half) and Allie Drechsler added 11 points and five assists. Courtney Fields grabbed a game-high 12 caroms.

Poor shooting and 20 turnovers combined between the two teams led to a low scoring first half. The Bullets shot 26 percent from the field while Haverford did not fare much better at 30 percent.

The Fords held a six-point lead with 6:29 to play, but Gettysburg steadily inched its way back. A three and a jumper by McGrory tied the score at 16-16, but Gettysburg did not stop there. An 11-0 run to end the half gave the visitors a 21-16 advantage at the break. McGrory scored 13 points in the half which kept the Bullets in the game considering Moser, the team's leading scorer, played just five minutes and did not score due to foul trouble.

Haverford got to within five when Voith hit a trey at the 16:21 mark of the second half. The Fords kept it close over the next four minutes until McGrory made a trey and a jumper with a Drechsler layup sandwiched in-between put the Bullets ahead, 40-29.

After Meeks made the front end of a two-shot foul, Voith buried another three to make it a seven-point game with 7:10 to play, however, that would be the Fords last field goal of the game. Haverford went 0-for-4 from the field while the Bullets finished on a 12-5 run.

Gettysburg held a commanding 46-29 advantage on the glass and used 23 offensive rebounds to score 12 second chance points.

The Scarlet and Black hit the road Wednesday to take on Washington College at 6 p.m. before returning home Saturday to start a three-game homestand.
