Women’s basketball hangs with Dickinson in 53-46 defeat

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team put forth a gutsy performance in a 53-46 loss to Centennial Conference foe Dickinson College Saturday afternoon. After falling behind by 12 points at the start, the Fords quickly erased the deficit and remained in striking distance until the closing minutes of the game.

Nina Voith led Haverford (5-12, 3-10 CC) with 14 points. Dominique Meeks scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Victoria Sobocinski provided a spark off the bench with a pair of three-pointers and eight points. Calla Miller filled the box score with seven points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Dickinson (13-5, 9-5 CC) placed three players in double-figures. Brooke Muller led all scorers with 15 points and was 7-for-9 from the foul line. Carole Dempsey and Alesha Sisco both scored 10 points. Dempsey had five steals and Sisco collected six caroms.

The Red Devils opened the game with the first 12 points, scoring on six of their first eight possessions. Miller got Haverford on the board with a three at the 14:02 mark which started a 12-0 run. Miller added three free throws later in the run that tied the score at 12-all.

Dickinson regained the lead and took its largest lead since the 12-0 start, 23-19, with 5:04 on the clock. A trey by Sobocinski at the other end of the floor pulled HC within one. The Red Devils scored on their next two possessions and Meeks ended the half with a layup to make the score 27-24.

The second half started with a 9-2 Dickinson run that spanned 4:32. The Fords pulled within two, 39-37, thanks to a 7-0 run that was capped by a pair of Voith free throws with 9:16 left, but that is the closest Haverford would get. Dickson led by as many as nine, but a three by Voith and a free throw by Miller with less than five minutes to go made it a five-point game, 48-43.

A steal by Meeks with 2:58 left gave the Fords a chance, but a missed three and a turnover followed by a jumper by Dickinson's Annie O'Donnell essentially thwarted any comeback.

Haverford returns home this Monday when they host Gettysburg College at 7 p.m.
