Lions roar past Fords at Tip-Off

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team fell victim to a cold shooting day as they dropped a 68-44 non-conference decision to The College of New Jersey Sunday afternoon at the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament.

Freshman Nina Voith hit for double-digits for the second game in a row leading the Fords with 11 points while also pulling down nine rebounds in the loss. Fellow newcomers Dominique Meeks and Victoria Sobocinski each added nine points to Voith's offensive efforts.

The winning Lions (2-2) broke out to a double-digit lead early over the Fords (1-1) but Haverford rallied back to pull within two at 19-17 and again at 21-19 but a 12-0 run allowed New Jersey to eventually take a 33-23 lead into the intermission.

A Voith 3-pointer dropped the lead to single-digits in the first minute of the second half but New Jersey steadily lengthened the margin to as many as 25 before closing out the 24-point win.

For the game Haverford hit only 13 baskets shooting 22 percent from the field in contrast to the hot-shooting Lions who nailed 44 percent of their shots. New Jersey also had a big edge down low scoring 48 of their points from within the paint compared to 18 in deep from the Fords.

In the first game of the day host Swarthmore defeated Middlebury by a score of 60-57.

Voith, in only her first two collegiate appearances, was named to the All-Tournament team along with Kathryn Stockbower from Swarthmore, Kate Fallon of Middlebury College, and New Jersey's Jess Imhof and tourney MVP Hannah Tait.

Haverford opens Centennial Conference play in their next game, a 5 p.m. contest Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Bryn Mawr College.
