Hot shooting by Bullets too much for women’s basketball in 61-50 loss

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In its first game of the new year, the Haverford College women's basketball team lost to visiting Gettysburg College, 61-50, Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action at Gooding Arena. The Fords trailed by just nine at the break but quickly fell behind by 18 in the second and could not recover.

Dominique Meeks filled the box score with a team-high 19 points, six rebounds and six steals. Meeks shot 50 percent (6-for-12) from the floor and made 7-of-9 free throws. Victoria Sobocinski added nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.

Haverford (5-5, 3-4 CC) hung with the Bullets early on until an 8-0 run gave the visitors a 22-11 lead with less than seven minutes to play in the first half. Meeks converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession to get it within eight. A jumper by Cara Wyant and a three by Sobocinski pulled the Fords within three points as the half approached the three-minute mark. Katie Earley hit a trey and Sara Kinsley made a layup to put Gettysburg (7-3, 2-3) back up by nine with 47 seconds remaining. Both teams exchanged baskets to keep it a nine-point game, 31-22, at the half.

Gettysburg came storming out of the gate in the second half, scoring on its first six possessions for a 45-27 advantage. Caitlin Moser accounted for six of the Bullets' first 12 points. The Fords never got closer than 12 until a 7-2 run cut the deficit to nine with three minutes to go. In that run Meeks connected on three jumpers and capped the run with a three-point play. After Haverford missed a jumper on its next possession the Bullets put the game away with two free throws and a three-ball by Julie McGrory on consecutive possessions.

Caitlin Moser scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards for Gettysburg. Rianna Doane chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. The Bullets received 22 points from their bench, thanks to McGrory's 14.

Haverford committed more turnovers (22-19) than the Bullets, but scored 22 points off Gettysburg miscues.

The Fords hit the road for the first time in 2011 when they travel to Immaculata University Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
