Women’s basketball opens season with 71-59 win over Eastern

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's basketball team opened up the 2010-11 season with a 71-59 victory versus Eastern University Tuesday evening at Gooding Arena. The Fords led by as many as 13 points in the first half and extended it to 25 in the second.

Nina Voith tied a career-high with 25 points. Voith scored 25 twice last season including the season opener. She knocked down five three-point field goals, tying a program record. Dominique Meeks and Calla Miller finished with 12 points apiece.

Shante Jones had a game-high 27 points for the Eagles. Bekah Roland posted a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds and Katie Lincoln added 11 points. Haverford (1-0) held the rest of Eastern (0-1) to just six points.

Haverford jumped out to a 7-0 start thanks to four free throws and a three by Miller. Through the first 10 minutes the Fords shot a scolding 8-of-11 from the field. During the latter part of that stretch HC went on a 14-6 run to expand its lead to 12. Voith connected on a pair of three's while Miller added another.

Eastern managed to get within in seven twice late, but the Fords closed the half on a 6-2 run. Alejandra Alvarez banked a three-point field goal as time expired to give HC a 42-30 advantage at the break.

The Fords made two substantial runs in the second half to put distance between themselves and Eastern. An early 7-0 run that saw a jumper and a trey by Victoria Sobocinski sandwiched between a Voith jumper gave HC a 14-point lead. Haverford's second run started with 8:54 remaining and quickly was at 7-0 before extending to 14-4, increasing the lead to 25 near the four-minute mark.

Haverford never trailed in the contest and scored 29 points off 24 Eagles turnovers.

The Fords travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for the Seahawk Tip-off Tournament this weekend. Haverford plays Virginia Wesleyan College Friday evening at 8 p.m. Saturday the Fords face either St. Mary's or Arcadia University at either 2 or 4 p.m.
