Women's Basketball Denies Dickinson on Senior Day, 66-62

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (16-5, 12-4 CC) defended its home court with a 66-62 victory over visiting Dickinson (9-11, 6-9 CC) on Senior Day inside Gooding '84 Arena.  The Fords withstood a late run from the Red Devils, as the visitors outscored Haverford 11-4 in the final 5:51 of the contest. Senior Katie Cook earned the 101st start of her career, becoming the program's all-time leader in games started in the process.

The Fords had three scorers in double figures, led by 17-point performances from Anna-Sophia Capizzi and Macy Goldbach. Megan Furch added 13 points to a seven-rebound afternoon. Maddie Gallic notched a career-best nine rebounds while Julianna Clark added nine points off the bench. Haverford scored 13 points off turnovers, and drilled nine three-pointers in the victory. A scorching hot second quarter helped Haverford build its advantage, as Haverford shot 8-13 from the field during the stretch.

Capizzi and Clark knocked down treys in the first quarter, as a sluggish start from both sides quickly turned into a shooting exhibition in the latter minutes of the stanza. Capizzi's triple cut the Dickinson lead to one at 8-7, while Clark converted as Haverford trailed by one at 11-10 with 3:33 to go.

Goldbach gave Haverford the lead back at 16-15, knocking down a trey in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Cook unleashed a three-pointer with just over six minutes left in the half, giving Haverford a 19-17 advantage. A nice feed from Nyla Robinson found Furch down low as the Fords pushed their lead to 23-19 with 4:57 remaining. Goldbach again connected from three-point range, handing Haverford a five-point cushion at 26-21 with under four minutes to go. Hannah Zoll later grabbed a jumper, and Goldbach finished a layup as Haverford went ahead by seven at 30-23 with 2:27 to go in the stanza.

Furch converted on an acrobatic jumper with 90 seconds left, putting Haverford up seven at 32-25. Capizzi drilled another three-pointer, handing Haverford an eight-point cushion up 35-28 with under a minute remaining. Dickinson didn't go away quietly, with Claudia Maira drilling a jumper to cut the Haverford lead to just six entering the intermission.

The Fords began the third quarter on an 11-0 run, as Haverford began to pull away behind strong interior offense from Furch, and sharpshooting effort from beyond the arc. The lead reached its apex of 17 as Furch hit a jumper with 5:25 left in the third. Some hustle plays from the Red Devils allowed the visitors to creep back into the contest, with layups from Kate Deutsch and Maira cutting the lead down to eight on two occasions in the third.

Capizzi connected from beyond-the arc to restore an 11-point lead in the early minutes of the fourth, and Haverford found itself up 60-48 after Gallic was sent to the free-throw line with 6:47 to play. After Clark connected on a transition layup with 5:51 to go, Dickinson outscored the Fords 11-4 down the stretch to close regulation.

Deutsch was an integral factor in keeping the Red Devils in it, knocking down a jumper to cut the lead to five at 64-59 with under two minutes remaining, and cutting the lead to a single possession in the final seconds of the contest. Deutsch converted from three-point range with 15.9 seconds remaining, breathing serious life into the Dickinson bench as the Red Devils trailed by just two at 64-62.

Gallic was fouled on the ensuing possession, hitting both her shots to open up the eventual four-point cushion for the Fords. With a foul to give, Haverford called timeout and then fouled Dickinson, cutting precious seconds off the clock. A last-ditch Red Devil three-point try sailed off the mark, allowing Haverford to seal a sixth consecutive conference win.

Deutsch was a menace to Haverford the entire contest, logging 23 points and 11 rebounds while Maira (13 points) and Jennifer Kremp (12 points) also tallied in double digits for Dickinson. The Fords swept the season series from the Red Devils for the third consecutive season.

The Fords now return to action on Tuesday, February 5, as Haverford takes on Bryn Mawr inside Gooding '84 Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
