HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Audrey Jakway posted a near double-double, but Haverford fell to visiting No. 22 Johns Hopkins, 62-38, on Saturday afternoon at Calvin J. Gooding '84 Arena.
Jakway led the Fords (8-11, 2-7 CC) with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, turning in a strong performance. Jakway also recorded a pair of blocks while battling inside against a deep Blue Jays (16-3, 8-1 CC) frontcourt.
Despite some strong defensive sequences, as Haverford tallied 12 steals and five blocks in the contest, the Fords struggled to keep pace offensively, shooting just 26.7 percent from the field (16-of-60) and 12.5 percent from three (2-of-16) on Saturday.
Johns Hopkins, the 22nd ranked team in the nation, established control early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before Jakway got Haverford on the board with a layup at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. The lead stretched to 12-2 on an Emily Collins layup with 5:30 to play, but a 9-2 run for the Fords was punctuated by a Jakway triple with 1:02 left in the first quarter, as suddenly Haverford was within three entering the second frame.
A sluggish second quarter for the Fords proved decisive, as Haverford was held to six points while Johns Hopkins extended its lead behind the duo of Michaela O'Neil (13 points, three blocks) and Kendall Dunham (eight points, four assists). The Blue Jays led 32-17 at halftime and never relinquished control.
Haverford responded with its best offensive stretch in the third quarter, where Jakway and Abby Ryan (eight points) combined to keep the deficit within striking distance. Caroline Orza sank a fast-break three-pointer to trim the margin to 14 late in the period, but the Blue Jays then responded to the salvo with a 10-0 run to wrestle back the momentum. Haverford's interior defense went toe-to-toe with the Hopkins forwards as Shae Mercer contributed two blocks and three steals, while Brianna Feifer added a team-high eight rebounds and three steals in a well-rounded effort.
The game served as the annual Play with Pride match in collaboration with Haverford's Play with Pride Club, supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion at Haverford and throughout collegiate athletics.
Women's Basketball will look to regroup when it hosts Swarthmore next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Centennial Conference action inside Gooding '84 Arena. The contest will be the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team going against the Garnet at approximately 8 p.m. - Hood Trophy points will be on the line in the first of a home-and-home in the rivalry series. The doubleheader will also serve as Haverford's National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) Celebration.
