GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The third-seeded Haverford College women's lacrosse team (14-5) fell to second-seeded Gettysburg (16-12), 13-10, in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on Friday at Clark Field.
Brooke Epstein and Kylie McNamara led the Fords with three goals apiece, while Bella Gattuso added two goals and an assist. Tiffany Mikulis paced Haverford with five draw controls, and goalkeeper Annie Bravacos tied her career high with 14 saves on 27 shots faced.
Despite early pressure from the host Bullets, including a Bravacos save that deflected off and over the crossbar, Gettysburg didn't strike until the 9:31 mark of the first quarter. Haverford responded with two quick goals — Epstein from Mikulis, and Ellie Hughes off a feed from Sophie Jaffe — to take a 2-1 lead. The Bullets tied it at 2-2 with 48 seconds left in the quarter.
Gattuso opened the second quarter with a goal to put the Fords up 3-2, but Gettysburg responded with a pair of goals to reclaim the lead. Epstein tied the game at 4-4, though another late goal sent the Bullets into halftime up 5-4, with Bravacos making a crucial save in the final seconds to keep the deficit at just one.
McNamara tied the game again early in the third, but Gettysburg surged ahead with three of the next four goals to go up 8-6. Epstein completed her hat trick moments later, but the Bullets stretched the lead to 10-6 before goals from McNamara and Mikulis in the final 24 seconds of the third quarter cut the deficit to 10-8.
Emily Crane's third goal of the night pushed the Bullets up 11-8 early in the fourth. Gattuso converted a free-position opportunity to bring Haverford back within two at 11-9, but Gettysburg answered again. McNamara again brought the Fords within two as she tallied her third of the night to make it 12-10, but Sophie Smith's hat trick goal sealed the 13-10 win for the Bullets, who will advance to face Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial final (7 p.m. Saturday in Lancaster).
Following a narrow defeat to Gettysburg, the Fords turn their focus to a potential NCAA Tournament berth. Haverford is currently ranked 17th in the NPI rankings and 19thi n the IWLCA national poll.
