Women's Tennis Moves Past Muhlenberg, 7-2

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team evened its overall and Centennial Conference record with a 7-2 win on the Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts Wednesday afternoon. The Fords (6-6, 3-3 CC) swept through the doubles portion and won four of the six singles matches to claim the conference win.

Haverford's first two doubles victories each came by 8-2 scores. Greta Koch and Courtney Ahmed teamed up for their first win together at the No. 2 doubles position. Haverford's first point of the night came from the No. 3 doubles team of Stephany Prodromos and Caroline Steliotes. That pairing is 2-1 together this spring.

The tightest match of doubles play came in the top slot with Robyn Himelstein and Abby Payson outlasting their Mules' counterparts by a 9-7 score. After evenly splitting the first 14 games, Haverford's No. 1 pairing held and broke serve to claim the win and clinch a sweep of doubles. Himelstein and Payson are now 4-3 when paired together this year.

The Fords got within a point of victory when Koch was victorious in the No. 2 singles match. The Fords' sophomore won her first set by a 6-2 score. She was down a game at the start of the second, but her opponent was forced to retire with an injury. Haverford sealed the victory with the most convincing win of the evening as Ahmed did not allow her opponent a game at No. 4 singles. Ahmed now has seven wins on the year, while Koch has six.

Haverford added on to the victory with wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Prodromos conceded just two games in the match at No. 5 singles as she won 6-2, 6-0. She improved to 5-4 in her freshman singles campaign following Wednesday's win. Payson logged her fifth win of the season as she was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at the No. 3 singles. At the top of the lineup, Himelstein battled the No. 22 player in the regional rankings, while the Mules also earned a point with a win at No. 6 singles.

Women's tennis currently sits in seventh place in the Centennial Conference standings. However, in a tightly contested race for the final two playoff spots, the Fords are just a half match back of fourth place. Haverford will have a chance to leap one of those teams who are within striking distance when Dickinson comes to campus on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
