
BAYONNE, N.J. – The Haverford College women's tennis team (9-5) earned its ninth win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Stevens (7-7) by a 6-1 score in non-conference action at the Bayonne Tennis Courts in the Garden State.
The Fords struck first in doubles play, as Rachael Fitzgerald and Mallika Reddy notched a 6-4 victory on court one over Stephanie Untermeyer and Alix Dry. Stevens responded on court three, where Sude Aytekin and Milagros Carbajal Diaz prevailed 6-4 against Erika Phanord and Caroline Gay. With the doubles point hanging in the balance, Lucy King and Abhi Menon secured a 6-4 win on court two over Lorena Piegas and GiGi Arenas to give Haverford a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
King delivered the first singles win for the Scarlet and Black on court two, downing Untermeyer 6-2, 6-1. Fitzgerald followed on court one, topping Dry 6-3, 6-4 to push the Fords ahead 3-0. On court five, Menon clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carbajal Diaz.
Phanord then held off Emma Eguia 6-3, 7-5 for Haverford's fifth point of the day. Gay added another win on court six, outlasting Piegas 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5). The match concluded on court three with Stevens picking up its lone point, as Aytekin edged Reddy 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8 super tiebreaker).
Haverford now returns to action Wednesday, April 23, hosting Bi-Co rival Bryn Mawr at 4 p.m. on the Bramall Courts.
