HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team (3-4, 2-1 CC) fell to 18th-ranked Swarthmore (6-3, 2-0 CC) in a Centennial Conference match on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 decision at the Bettye Marshall and Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts. The match between the two rivals counted for one point in the annual Hood Trophy rivalry series, which is currently tied at 5.5 points each.
Swarthmore secured the doubles point to open the match. Nathalie Williams and Lola Diaz defeated Mallika Reddy and Rachael Fitzgerald 6-0 on court one, while Erin Li and Kathleen Shiffer clinched the crucial point with a 6-2 win over Abhishree Menon and Erika Phanord on court two. In a tightly contested battle on court three, Ella Strickler and Riya Rao edged out Lucy King and Caroline Gay 7-5.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Garnet extended their advantage with a straight-set win on court six, where Lara Geib topped Gay 6-1, 6-4. Shiffer followed with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Phanord on court four, before Strickler secured Swarthmore's match-clinching fourth point with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Menon on court five.
On court two, Li, the 18th ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, outlasted King 6-2, 7-5, while Williams earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over Fitzgerald at the top singles spot. Diaz then closed out the match with a dramatic win on court three, prevailing over Reddy 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to seal Swarthmore's 7-0 victory.
Haverford will face a quick turnaround as they host TCNJ in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, April 3, at 4 p.m. The match will serve as Haverford's annual Hidden Opponent Green Out Match for mental health awareness.
