Potter highlights strong effort by Fords at New Jersey Invite

EWING, N.J. - Rachael Potter ran to a first-place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to lead a strong effort by the Haverford College women's track team at the New Jersey Invitational on Saturday.

Potter earned first-place with a season-best time of 11 minutes, 59.23 seconds to win the race by a margin of 50 seconds.

Classmate Dominique Meeks also performed well on the day as her career-best discus throw of 31.71 meters (104 feet) was good for second and another impressive effort of 10.73m (35-2.5) in the shot put grabbed fourth.

Also shining in the field event portion of the meet was Kylie Lipinski who finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.42m (37-5.50) that stands as the best in the Centennial Conference this season. Lipinski also earned a sixth-place finish in the long jump, an effort that stands second on the conference performance list, while Carolyn Oehrig and Robin Chernow finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Back on the track, the freshman tandem of Kathryn Balmer and Phoebe Miller had an impressive  showing in the 1,500 as they finished second and third with career-best efforts.  Balmer, the top collegiate finisher in the race, clocked a time of 4:44.08 which just preceded Miller who finished in 4:44.38. Sara Hess claimed fifth with a career-best time of 4:46.80 and Hope Rainey came in seventh as the Fords grabbed four spots in the top 10 overall. Balmer, Miller, and Hess now occupy positions two through four on the conference performance list.

A quartet of Haverford runners also ran well in the 3,000 as Emily Scott, Charlotte Lellman, Chelsea Thorsheim, and Alice Vienneau finished fifth through eighth.

Finally, Hannah Davis and Nicole Inman earned top-10 finishes in the 400 meter dash. Davis, just missed matching her season-best time as she crossed the line in 1:01.63 in seventh and Inman followed less than a second later to grab ninth.

The Fords will be busy next weekend as they compete in the Widener Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
