Men's squash rolls past Vassar, 9-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College's 42nd-ranked men's squash team captured its second victory of the season over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon, downing the visiting Brewers by a 9-0 score after taking an opening-weekend match-up in the fall by nearly the identical score.

The Fords (6-3) lost only one game Saturday on the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center's squash courts, winning eight of nine matches by 3-0 scores against the over-matched Brewers (1-10) who are ranked 54th in the latest College Squash Association rankings.

Laurenson Ward, playing at No. 6, captured Haverford's first victory of the contest with an impressive effort that saw the freshman surrender just two points to Daniel Doctor as he won 11-0, 11-2, 11-0. Classmate Nathan Vestrich-Shade, at No. 5, duplicated the effort with an 11-0, 11-2, 11-0 victory over David Garfinkel.

Pushed to four games  in his match at the top spot in the ladder, Andy McComas persevered for a 16-14 victory in game four to wrap up the dominating win by the Fords.

Haverford took down host Vassar, 8-1, on Nov. 11 at the Guy Fawkes Challenge.

The Fords face a challenge next Saturday when they host seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall College at 11 a.m. at the GIAC Squash Courts. Following the match against the Diplomats, Haverford will take on No. 28 Johns Hopkins University at 3 p.m.
