Men's Squash Opens CSA Team Championships Friday at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Haverford College Men's Squash (10-6) opens play at the 2020 CSA Men's Team Championships on Friday morning, beginning the quest for the Conroy Cup at Harvard's Murr Center.

The championships open in earnest on Friday, February 28 and continue through Sunday, March 1 at three sites in the Boston metro area. The main competition site at Harvard will be accompanied by satellite courts at nearby MIT and Tufts. In total, 57 teams will compete across seven divisions. No. 31 Haverford will face off with No. 26 Hamilton at 10 a.m. in quarterfinal action. Pending the results of other quarterfinal matchups, the Fords will then face off with either No. 27 Wesleyan or No. 30 Chatham on Saturday at 9 a.m. back at Harvard, before wrapping up play Sunday at a site and time to be determined.

No. 25 Dickinson is the top-seeded team in the Conroy Cup (D Division) grouping, followed by No. 26 Hamilton, No. 27 Wesleyan, No. 28 Connecticut College, No. 29 St. Lawrence, No. 30 Chatham, the No. 31 Fords, and No. 32 California. Haverford has not faced Hamilton since a narrow 5-4 victory in the 2018 CSA Team Championships after the scheduled meeting between the two sides earlier this season was cancelled due to winter weather. The Fords have matched with Dickinson, Connecticut College, St. Lawrence, and Wesleyan already this season, and bested Chatham at home in that program's inaugural campaign last season. Men's Squash has not faced off with Cal since the 2008-09 season.

Haverford will compete in the Conroy Cup for the third consecutive campaign after capturing the Chaffee Cup (E Division) in the 2016-17 season. Last year, Haverford finished No. 30 in the final CSA Rankings after a 1-2 showing at nationals and will look to eclipse that finish with a strong showing in the Bay State. The Fords certainly seem up to the task, as the team enters postseason play with wins in five of their last six matches, and has reached 10 or more wins for the fourth consecutive season.

The squad has seen its greatest success this season at the second and fourth flights, as Fitz Dougherty (7-3) and Quinton Crawford (4-2) have combined to go 11-5 at the second, while Tate Miller (5-2), Crawford (5-2) and Keil Reedich (2-0) have gone 12-4 at the fourth. At the top flight co-captain Davis Chase has compiled an impressive 9-7 mark against some of the best competition the sport has to offer.

Dougherty in particular has put together one of the most impressive careers that the Haverford program has seen as the junior co-captain has compiled a 38-11 overall career record thus far. The Villanova, Pa. product has the best career winning percentage in program history (.776). Senior co-captain Miller has also etched his name into the Haverford annals, as he currently ranks fourth in program history with 42 total individual match wins.  In the middle flights, John Collins (9-7 between the fifth and sixth flights) and and Alden Weinberg (4-1 at the sixth flight), have helped anchor the Fords while the depth of the Haverford ladder has also been showcased as Nathan Wang (7-5) has emerged at the seventh flight in his rookie year and Khalil Walker has done the same at the eight, as he has won six of his last 10 matches, including five sweeps in that stretch. Aaron Witkin (9-3) has also excelled at the ninth flight so far this season, posting his second consecutive nine-win season in his sophomore year.

Live results from all of the action, along with live video streaming of selected courts at Harvard, are available from the CSA Team Championships page.
